Gaining Weight / Life with Koda

Went to the pediatrician yesterday to have Lucas checked up for his jaundice. The doctor said he looks great and the jaundice is 90% gone and should be completely out in a week or so. The other big news is that Lucas has gained 10 ounces since his last weighing! We were so happy to hear that mainly because he had such a hard time feeding the first few days. At birth, he weighted 6 lbs. 10 oz. Two days later, at his first doctor’s visit, he lost some weight (which is normal) and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. And, now, he is still slim and trim, but very healthy, 7 lbs. 1 oz. at 12 days old.

Later in the day we had another doctor’s appointment at the pediatric eurologist, but in between appointments, we decided to visit Mom’s house in Tustin. This was actually Lucas’s first visit to a non-doctor’s office. We were there for a few hours and cousin Tristan said hi to Lucas. After all of this, we were pretty tired. We went home and took Koda Boda for a walk with Lucas.

3 in my lifeSpeaking of Koda, he’s been pretty good with this whole baby thing. I did most of the things that were advised when introducing a new baby to your dog. I gave him the beanie that Lucas wore in the hospital. I even gave him a blanket that Lucas used. Other than that, I let Koda sniff Lucas here and there so he gets used to him. He is not allowed in our bedroom so he just chills right outside the door…all the time. At first he was freaked out when he first heard the crying but he didn’t bark. He just ran over to our door and had that “What the hell is that?” look on his face. Now after a week and a half of crying, he doesn’t mind it anymore.

The only negative I have noticed is that Koda is not so crazy for his food when it’s feeding time. Usually, when I have his bowl of food ready for him to eat, he will be sitting and waiting/begging for it. I would put his food bowl down and he waits for my signal, then he goes to town on it. But now, he doesn’t get excited for it at all. I would put his food down and he will just look at me like I’m crazy. I walk away and he follows me. He eats his food about 10 minutes later. As long as he’s eating, I’m not too worried, but I assume he’s feeling just a little bit neglected with Lucas around. He still gets his long morning walks and the occasional game of catch, so he is doing well.
