My Day Off with the Boys

On Monday, I took the day off and took the boys to the Santa Ana Zoo. It’s not the best, but it’s so close by and Lucas loves animals so he was excited. His favorite are elephants, so he kept on asking me “Are there elephants?” I told him “I’m not sure, we have to ask them, OK?” Lucas responds with a “HO-kay!” So we get to the ticket window and I pay my six bucks and Lucas asks the attendant: “Are there elephants?” (BTW, his “elephants” sounds more like “hefafants”). The guys says “Only on weekends.” I responded with “Are you serious?!?” He said “Yep,” so I told Lucas that he would have to come back on Sunday with Mommy. He was a bit sad, but he was still eager to get in.

I bottle fed Nathan before we left the house so he was good to go for at least 3 hours. He fell asleep in the car and woke up when we got there. While we were entering the zoo, Lucas saw him and said “Uh oh, someone’s awake!”. I strolled the little dude around while Lucas went crazy running around looking at each animal. At each cage/area, he would say “What’s that?” with a pointed finger. “A monkey”, I said. Lucas came back with “What kind of monkey?” I thought it was a pretty legitimate question knowing all the different monkeys out there. So I would read every sign to him. But when we got to the Farm area, he asked his “What’s that?” question over and over. At one point I said “That’s a duck”. I heard “What kind of duck?” After some thought, I said “I don’t know…a brown duck”. Then that turned into “I don’t know…a black goat!” and “I don’t know… a white sheep.” I wish I had better answers but I’m not too familiar with the exact species of farm animals :)

If you ever go to the local zoo on weekdays, you will see a ton of mom’s with their strollers and little toddlers running around. Add to this, a bunch of school kids with their teachers and you have a pretty lively place at 11am. There was a playground where Lucas played with some older kids and I was able to change Nathan’s diapers. I was the only dad there with kids so I felt a bit out of place. I could feel all the mom’s staring at me like I was such a weirdo. I guess that’s what it would feel like to be a stay-at-home-dad and going to the park with all the stroller-toting-moms around.

It was a great 3 hours. Lucas got to see some monkeys, llamas, emus, wallabies, snakes, iguanas, owls, horses, cows, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and more! We even rode their train that went around the zoo. Lucas was in heaven! Trains and animals…his two favorite things in the world! And I was able to spend some quality time with the boys. It was great…the only bad thing was the next morning, Lucas said “Can we go to the zoo?”

—

We’re off to San Diego to attend our friends’ wedding. I’m a groomsman, so it’ll be a fun change of pace :) We’ll be there for two nights. Can’t wait…it should be a blast! A pretty fabulous duo will be shooting it, so I’ll make sure I meet them and say hi to them. Have an awesome weekend!!

From the first time I met with Elaine and Brian, I just had that feeling that their wedding was gonna be a special one. Full of laughter and tears. Intimate yet fun! And of course, full of awesome details! Elaine is such a sweetheart and Brian is a chuckle waiting to happen. Such a big guy with an intimidating stare, but is so super nice and so much fun to be around. The ceremony took place at St. Anne’s in Seal Beach and then headed down to the Waterfront Hilton in Huntington Beach. They warned me that their friends were gonna have a blast and they did just that and more! Since our buddy Steve at Golden Sounds Entertainment was in charge of the party, we knew it would be hype on the dance floor all night long! Thanks to Amanda from In The Now Weddings and Events for putting together an awesome wedding! And the florals from Devynn’s Garden were beautiful. They had three different centerpieces that looked great! Check out some of the days highlights:

Elaine looked great in her lacy dress. I’m lovin lace these days.

1935 Rolls Royce!

In the church entrance with Dad.

St. Anne’s was a cool little church.

It was a traditional Catholic ceremony.

OK, do we look alike? HAHAHA They swear that I remind them of their good friend Orville (on the right). Must be the hair!

Time for some B+G!

More Rolls action.

They are so sweet together.

Some hallway action.

We found some interesting spots around the Hilton.

One of my faves!

Bridal Party was fun! The guys were a hoot!

Brian did some modeling in the past. Can’t you can tell from his stare :)

Brian’s uncle was passing around these awesome stickers! Here’s one on Brian’s mom.

What an entrance!

The MOH was ribbing him for his modeling…it was hilarious. Brian did an Abercrombie catalog!

It was time to Dance!

My last favorite…right before the garter toss.

Just wanted to share some shots of the new office/studio/gallery/meeting space. Whatever you want to call it, it’s our home away from home. It’s our sanctuary from toy madness and diapers piling up in the trash can. It’s where the work gets done. It’s our little corner of the world. It’s tiny but it’s ours.

Our little place is now pretty much done. We’ve had the space since February, but really only started working here about 4 weeks ago. We decided on a more subdued and chill feel. I went with modern lines with natural textures. Furniture is always a big debate between us, but I think we are at peace with things. I’m sure we’ll be adding and replacing things along the way, but for now, it’s good to go. And can I say that I love coming to work in the morning and getting stuff done!

I try to stay in the office on a consistent basis, but it gets random. I’m usually in from 8:30-5:30pm. If you’re ever near Tustin, swing on by. We’re near Old Town Tustin. Google Maps link.

Always looking at the kiddos. Both 16′”x16″ canvas. This is above my desk.

Our table.

Freaking love this sofa! My favorite piece.

Tey’s desk area complete with old-school boombox. Above is a 25″x55″ canvas of Jill & Troy.
They are getting married down by the water in Laguna so this will be a great contrast to their wedding photos. Just a quick stroll around a few blocks and we came back with a ton of great shots…color and texture everywhere! It was a bit hot out but thank goodness for big buildings and the shadows they cast! The light was fantastic, so it made up for the heat. Enjoy some faves:

It was a spectacular day in Oceanside as Tey and I joined Molly, Zack and their families for a beautiful wedding. They rented out a private condo right on the beach and had the ceremony on the back of the property…right next to the beach. And the rockin’ reception was on the rooftop. A really cool setup. They have awesome family and friends who were a blast to hang out with. Molly and Zack are just super cool. They made everything so fun and easy…especially their portraits. I restrained from posting some shots that were TOO much fun…I’ll save those for their private viewing :) Thanks to Joan from Samspson & Associates for setting things up and keeping us in check! It was a great, great event! Molly and Zack, thanks for an amazing day! Check out some of the days highlights.

YAY for Manolos!

I’m getting to be a Disneyland regular! Yep, I joined Elaine and Brian at Disneyland and California Adventure for their engagement session and this trip did it! We are getting season passes so we can take the kids whenever we wanted. We’re so close that it’s a pretty good value and I found some cool spots that I think Lucas would love! Anyway, Elaine and Brian were a treat to be around…so easy going and up for anything. We had fun hunting down spots to shoot and they gave me the grand tour of CA adventure. Quite different from Disneyland but still fun in it’s own right. This was my first time there, so I can’t wait to take the fam. They are getting married in a few weeks! And by the sound of it, it’s gonna be quite the party! Here’s some goodies:

A Hot day for a hot wedding! It was the weekend of freakishly hot weather for those in SoCal but we all managed to stay cool and have a good time. Annette and Arnold’s wedding took place at the Newport Beach Marriott with their ultra cool Atrium. It was a life saver during the heat wave! Thanks to Carolyn from The Special Day. Her attention to detail was second to none, as usual. Also got to work with Jim from Honored Occasions. They did an amazing job on the lighting! Jim was an awesome MC, DJ and such a cool guy. I love working with other super cool vendors…just makes it so much more fun. Add to that a Photobooth from Red Cheese, a fun crowd and we got some really fun reception photos. Check out some from the day.

During a baby’s first year, it’s all about milestones. And we’ve reached a pretty big one. Little Nathan is now turning over on his own! So, now the real parenting begins as we can’t leave him alone anymore. He’s funny, too…when you put him down on his back, he’ll flip over right away and then starts crying. I’m thinking “Didn’t you want to do that!?!” But it’s getting more fun now. Nathan smiles and giggles like a madman. I love it when he sees me and a giant grin/giggle erupts. That’s the best! Lucas is *mostly* a good big brother and will get stuff for his baby brother. And by the way, the next time you see him, he wants to be called “Big Brother Lucas”. Have a great weekend!

Here’s the little guy. Another new favorite…from my phone.

I’m one of those local OC peeps who don’t really go to Disneyland too often. I live about 15 minutes away and it just doesn’t register to me that the “Happiest Place on Earth” is so close by. So, when Audrey and Garrett wanted to have their engagement session at Disneyland, I was pretty pumped. I expected it to be so much fun…and it was! They are such big Disney fans and visit quite often so I was so happy to share the special day with them. They dropped so much Disney knowledge on me, it made me want to take the boys the next day. Now, we’re thinking of getting season passes! :) Thanks you guys for taking me around and a special thanks to Audrey for being so brave and going on the Teacups! It was her first time ever on my favorite ride!

We’ve been a bit busy at home moving Lucas out of his old room and into the old office. So, now, everyone will have their own room and little nathan will be out of our bedroom :) Yay! Anyway, we have weddings and shoots scheduled for seemingly every weekend from this weekend and on, so things should start getting interesting around here. I’m fully moved into the office/studio and should be writing about it and posting some pics sometime next week.

So on to this week’s photos. I take care of the kiddies every morning for about a 1-2 hours before I take them to my Mom. And during that time, all kinds of madness happens. So when I have to feed Lucas, what do I give him? The easiest thing, of course. Cereal! And here is Nathan on his little play mat. So glad he likes it, I can leave him on that thing for almost 15 mins…which is a LIFETIME! Happy weekend!

Something must be in the water here in Southern California. Babies popping out everywhere!! I guess it’s always the case…just never noticed it before. Well, here are Tim and Juna and their new baby girl, Milo. At the time, Milo was less than 2 weeks old and I had the pleasure of shooting her in their house. Even their dog, Ellie, got in the act. Don’t worry Ellie, Koda feels your pain. As newbie parents, they are doing great, doing everything that we did waaaaaay back when. Congrats you two! When she gets older, you better watch out…Lucas and Nathan will be fighting to get in line ;) Check out a sample of what we did:

She’s giving me the mad dog stare.

It was hard to keep her happy…I don’t think she liked me. But here she was calm.

I LOVE the baby Thinker pose.

The was a fun scene to set up. I call this “Good Parents”

Big Daddy Tim

I think she will be a basketball player. She was throwing the 3-point sign!

Can’t go wrong with shooting tiny feet.

Hi Ellie…you OK?
I’ve been in Vegas (again!) for the past few days and I’m back feeling like a regular person again. Something about being in Vegas makes me feel “irregular”. Anyway, I was there attending a friend’s bachelor party…so you know how that goes. It’s always nice to hang out with the guys even if it’s doing not much of anything.

For this edition of FF, I’ll include a picture of myself, but this time with my little tough guy. Something about him and his little middle finger. He just can’t hide it! I guess he doesn’t like his Mommy :) Have a great start to the week!

I’m happy to be getting back in the flow of things and what a great way to start the rush. Such a fun wedding! Christina and Danny tied the knot at the awesome Turnip Rose at the Grand Newport Plaza this past Sunday. Such a great venue…great views, awesome staff and yummy food! The early part of the day was great for portraits as we did them all before the ceremony…everyone was so relaxed. Then when party time came along, it was a blast! Thanks to Leanna from Bella Blooms, Mary, Chrissy and the great guys at Turnip, Steve from Golden Sounds who is always a treat to work with. The officiant was Don Johnson who was so funny and enlightening as usual…he always brings a smile to my face. Congratulations to the Christina and Danny! Thanks for showing us how to do it!

So where else could we do their session other than your friendly neighborhood grocery store?! it was so much fun ducking in and out of the aisles, getting funky stares from the patrons and avoiding all the workers. They did an amazing job under that stress!!! It was hilarious, fun and exciting…I’ve always wanted to see a makeout session in the produce department :) Good thing we were close to the beach because we also got a glimpse of an amazing sunset. Thanks guys…you are truly fearless trend setters!
